‘Dirty Girl’ to also screen at Toronto International Film Festival

Yesterday, we reported of John Curran’s crime drama Stone being set to premiere at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival in September. Well, according to Milla Jovovich herself via her verified Twitter account @MillaJovovich, the same goes for Abe Sylvia’s Dirty Girl! From the source:

Jst found out that both of my new films, “STONE” and “DIRTY GIRL” will premiere at the toronto film festival! SO COOL! I’m so happy abt it!

Dirty Girl being part of the TIFF schedule has yet to be officially announced, however this news coming straight from Milla is likely to be confirmed later. Hopefully, this also means Milla will be appearing at this year’s TIFF! Keep your fingers crossed for new pics.

In less exciting movie news, don’t expect to see too many (authorized) pictures of Milla on the Oklahoma City set of Bringing Up Bobby, as Milla says she’s not allowed to post pictures from the production. Bummer.

‘Stone’ to premiere at 2010 Toronto International Film Festival

According to the Toronto International Film Festival official site, John Curran’s crime drama Stone, starring Robert De Niro, Edward Norton and Milla Jovovich, will be screened at this year’s festival, running September 9-19. The festival film schedule won’t be locked until August 23, however, so we’ll have to wait until then for specifics. We’ll keep you posted, though.

Stone official description from the TIFF website:

There is no greater pleasure in cinema than watching great actors at work. Director John Curran (We Don’t Live Here Anymore) once again guides top actors to terrific performances in Stone. Delving into the mind of a deranged arsonist and an off-kilter parole officer, this taut thriller pits two generations of Hollywood’s most compelling dramatic actors against each other in a battle of blackmail and emotional manipulation.

Jack Mabry (Robert De Niro) is an unforgiving man, hardened after years of working as a parole officer. Nearing retirement, he takes one last case. The man in question, Gerald “Stone” Creeson (Edward Norton), is a convicted arsonist up for his latest parole hearing, but full of his usual bravado and twisted logic. A decade earlier, he and his cousin broke into his grandparent’s home, murdered them and burned their house to the ground. Now, Stone insists that his beautiful but not-quite-there wife, Lucetta (Milla Jovovich), meet with Jack. Against his better judgment, Jack meets her one whisky-fuelled evening, and it soon becomes apparent that no one involved has pure intentions.

De Niro is riveting endowing his character with a flawed psyche that skews his decision-making and distorts his perspective. Distant and threatening to his own wife (Frances Conroy), he is an aging thug who suddenly finds a spark of light in his life. Norton plays Stone as a fascinating degenerate, kin to his early role in Primal Fear. And Jovovich curdles her character’s sweetness with a dark edge.

With all this acting prowess on display, Curran could be excused for sitting back and letting the performances do all the work. But he pays as close attention to the screenplay (he recently co-wrote Michael Winterbottom’s The Killer Inside Me), and, most impressively, to the sound design. Even with its dangerous and sometimes seamy characters, this is a film of insight, grace and precision.

In related news, WENN.com reports via IMDb that Stone’s production company Overture Films will be ceasing operations. According to the site, Relativity Media has taken over the company’s marketing and distribution operations, and although the company’s three upcoming films Stone, Let Me In and Jack Goes Boating, will be released as planned, Overture will shut down completely following their release.

Finally, we’ve updated the gallery with two new but small promotional stills of Milla as Lucetta in the film. They’re really very small, but they’re also the first ones we’ve had in a long time; hopefully, better-res ones will surface online soon.

Comic-Con 2010: Resident Evil Afterlife Blows 3D Away

If you thought 3D movies are a bunch of hooey that's an excuse for studios to pump up their ticket prices - well, you're probably right. But out in Hollywood, there are two types of people who utilize 3D the right way: people who craft subtle depth to immerse you in their worlds...and people who throw sh*t in your face.

Guess which type Resident Evil: Afterlife is?

Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, newcomer Wentworth Miller and director Paul W.S. Anderson all appeared on the panel for the fourth entry in the RE franchise and ensured the audience that just because its their fourth movie, the series shows no sign of slowing down.

The panel opened with a new trailer:

It opens with an throwback to Extinction with Alice still hunting Umbrella. She travels to Alaska, where the virus is still turning people into creatures with four-pronged incisors. It's difficult to tell what the actual plot to Afterlife is, but the 3D trailer featured plenty of Alice slo-mo jumping, firing off pistols and nearly escaping destruction by plane. The Umbrella corps and Wesker (from the game) are still very much a presence and Alice has hooked back up with Claire and her brother Chris to kick their ass. 3D ninja stars in your face!

Milla, just making sure you know she's a bad ass, drops the final line, "Is that any way to treat a lady?"

The final footage is a fight scene between Alice, Claire and The Executioner (featured in the game Resident Evil 5). If you're a fan of giant hammers breaking tile floor and wet women with guns, you're gonna eat it up. The scene opens with The Executioner slicing a dude's head in half (hell yes), and the fight continues until Claire takes him down with a close shot to the chest...or does she!? It's not that easy to kill a ten-foot mammoth.

Afterlife has taken a page out of the Zack Snyder playbook - lots of greenscreen, 300-style effects, slo-mo action, but it works. While most of the 3D plays to the camera, the environments are also enriched by the technology. Paul W.S. Anderson built sets to increase the depth, and it shows.

But does the story hold up? In trailer form, the movie looks like fun, but the question remains: if you get drunk enough to make Resident Evil: Afterlife fun, will you be able to watch it in 3D?

New ‘Vykrutasy’ videos, interview with director Gabriadze

Yet another update on Vykrutasy!

First, we have an article on the Russian-language romcom from Prime Time Russia, featuring a brief interview with debuting director Leo Gabriadze. Perhaps the most relevant to us Milla Jovovich-fans are these excerpts:

With two of Russia’s most sought-after artists in the lead – the burlesque “one-man band” Ivan Urgant and the versatile “Hamlet” Konstantin Khabensky, as well as the Fifth Element star Milla Jovovich in the limelight – there must have been an electric chemistry between all the three on set.

“Well, Ivan and Milla actually knew each other from before. It was fun working with all of them. The atmosphere on set was laid back and happy, everybody was joking all the time. Milla is amazing. She has so much passion, respect and devotion! And remember, she has never performed in Russian before. It was very hard for her. She has really shaped her character, put herself into it. Initially I didn’t like her character as written in the script, but she somehow managed to breathe real life into it, making it exciting and strong. The whole team was in love with her. She is open and charming.” [...]

Given that Timur Bekmambetov – one of the most celebrated, foremost and successful Russian filmmakers working in Hollywood and who directed Night Watch, Day Watch, and Wanted – is producing the film, will his “Vykrutasy” also try to attract audiences outside of Russia after the film’s release later this autumn?

“If you shoot a Russian-language movie, you are targeting Russian audiences. It is quite rare that your story is so understandable for audiences across the world that it becomes successful elsewhere. But when you are making a comedy about a specific situation, with specific jokes and dialogues, it is hard to target international audiences.”

The full article, complete with a couple of pics from the set, is available for reading on the Prime Time Russia website.

Then we have another two Russian TV reports from the Moscow set of the film, thanks to Vasilij. This first report is from the June 22 day of shooting. Although Milla herself is not interviewed, the clip features several great glimpses of her and co-stars Ivan Urgant and Konstantin Khabenskiy on the set and off-camera. Producer Timur Bekmambetov is also interviewed, but of course only in Russian. Here’s the clip:

Here’s another Russian TV report from the wedding set:

Vasilij was also kind enough to translate for us this great Russia-24 TV report, which we posted on the site a couple of days ago. The report and English transcript as follows:

Russia-24 channel, “Movie industry”

Host Ivan Kudryavtsev – Luc Besson’s ex-wife, actress Milla Jovovich was working in Moscow as well this moment. She’s starring in a new Timur Bekmambetov comedy “Vykrutasy” along with such Russian stars like Sergey Svetlakov [the channel made a mistake here] and Ivan Urgant.

Narrator – “Kolotilov”, “Schast’e” spelled with “Sh” ["Happiness"] and finally “Vykrutasy”… The new feature film of producer Timur Bekmambetov has changed its name several times. The script has changed too. The biggest change happened when Milla Jovovich suddenly agreed to participate in the project. 70 % of the movie was filmed and even edited last year. Originally the plot’s intrigue was based on a funny event: a school teacher played by Konstantin Khabenkiy is in a rush to get to his own wedding ceremony in time but gets intercepted by some authorities, taking his passport away and forcing him to train a teen soccer team for a big championship. Now that Milla Jovovich is on board the story’s emphasis was switched to love story. While Kolotilov’s trying his best to get rid of his soccer coaching duties, the girl is being wheedled by her ex-fiancé, portrayed by Ivan Urgant.

Milla Jovovich – You know… Timur just smacked me on the head and I woke up here… and… So what do I have to do then? Well I just went onto the stage and sang “Wedding” [Svad'ba], played with Ivan, and then with Kostya [Khabenskiy]. Well… I didn’t have a clue what to do [meaning I had no choice] – I was already here and that’s it.

Narrator – Of course in reality it all wasn’t so easy. Milla was able to manage only 10 filming days because of her tight schedule. It was a real challenge for director Levan Gabriagze who was making a feature film for the very first time. Tough time constraints almost put the project on the verge of ruin. The cast had to sacrifice their rest.

Milla – I learn, learn and learn my lines every night. And my brain got so spinned by Russian language. I guess I’ve been talking Russian more than in my entire life this week. It’s easier for me to speak when I practise. But on the first day on set things were messed up in my mind and I could only read my lines and read them again and again so that I could say them on screen. Because when you play with such amazing actors you should know your lines and be able to react quickly, or otherwise Ivan and Kostya will kill you. So I found strength and I did it.

Levan Gabriadze (director) – All 12 hours that she spends on the set she doesn’t lose her focus for even one minute: she either reads her lines or learns the song — she always stays with us.

Milla – “Dear guests, the next song I’ll perform for you myself”.

Narrator – Milla Jovovich speaks Russian in this movie. She managed to overcome the language barrier, however she didn’t succeed in getting rid of her American accent. The creators of the movie came up with a special story for her heroine Nadya so that the viewers won’t get puzzled [because of her accent].

Milla – Well, it’s a comedy and Timur told me “it’ll be really nice having an accent, we’ll get everything arranged to make everybody understand and stuff why you’re there”. Nadya… she’s very educated [an upper class girl], she had studied for 10 years in London. Well, she hadn’t been in Moscow for a long time. And so she hits this Kolotilov with her car and in a way he’s not an ordinary guy for her because she always used to be with her mom, they’re rich, and can stay worldwide. And he’s just a normal provincial teacher. So she finds fascination in it – an opportunity to be a normal girl.

Narrator – Milla Jovovich’s comedy role is a surprise for viewers. The actress is usually seen as a super-woman possessing inhuman physical powers.

Gabriadze – I think she’s a very good comedy actress. She plays her part in a very proper way, offers a lot of funny things.

Milla – It’s always very, very funny to do a comedy. And… well… it’s much easier than doing dramatical roles I always do or the action movies I do.

Narrator – All scenes featuring Milla Jovovich were filmed in Moscow last week. The main locations were the Smolenskay Street and the Cafe Club “The Most”, where the wedding party was filmed.

Milla – We’re fooling around so hard here. “It’s totally insane!” as I say in the movie! It’s just something! [That's the kind!]… I hit the table all over the place, hit the cake, hit Kostya yesterday. Now Ivan… is going to be beaten by Kostya. We’re all beaten, tired but still having fun nevertheless! So I’ll be shown fooling around now… um… all over Russia. And maybe you’ll like it [laughs].

Narrator – The “Vykrutasy” movie budget and its release date haven’t been announced yet although it’s known that this motion picture is coming to big screens this November. Anastasiya Timerdjanova, “Movie Industry”.

A kind of magic with the Fifth Element

A matter of romantic choice can turn into a laughing matter if two Romeos fall for one Juliet. Sooner or later one of them will be dismissed, and the other – kissed! "Vykrutasy” (“The Whims”) –a comedy-adventure with a Russian twist, starring Hollywood sweetheart Milla Jovovich – mixes love, luck, and humor. The movie from debut-director Leo Gabriadze, who studied in California and in Tbilisi, promises to revive the best traditions of Soviet comedies, which are recognized for their cheerful spirit and artistic delivery.

In fact, Gabriadze first made a name for himself as an actor, playing one of the lead roles in “Kin-Dza-Dza”, Georgy Danelia’s cult 1986-comedy. The screenplay was co-written by Leo’s father Rezo Gabriadze, a genius Georgian artist/puppeteer/writer/film and stage director/sculptor/designer, whose trademark play “The Battle of Stalingrad” has been performed worldwide, winning praise and admiration.

Growing up in such an unconventional artistic family, Leo Gabriadze has also inherited some of his father’s talents and passions. He admits – shyly and proudly at once – that he often looks at things through his father’s eyes. Having majored in computer graphics and animation at California University, he worked in advertising, making commercials for a number of leading Russian and foreign brands. Has it helped him feel more confident on the set of his debut?

Gabriadze replies that he got very lucky.

“It’s stressful to do something for the first time, publicly. But I enjoyed the experience greatly. We have been working on it for about a year and a half, non stop. All my life I have tried my hand at lots of different things because I have many interests and hobbies, but shooting a film makes you set your priorities straight and concentrate on one particular subject matter all the time. Nothing else is important, except for what happens on set and later in the editing bay. Even when you meet your friends, the only thing you can think of or talk about is your film,” the filmmaker said in an exclusive interview with RT.

She is open and charming.”

Given the fact that Leo’s role-models since childhood have been Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati, is he very demanding on set?

“You have to be! You have to control everything, making sure that nothing will affect your actors, their story and the atmosphere. The job of the director is to unite a lot of creative people together.”

Gabriadze says the biggest challenge in arts and in the film industry for him is “to get audiences in the state of dreaming so that they become absolutely devoted to the screen.”

“I want to make a project that is needed, but I also want people to enjoy it. I don’t know any filmmaker in the world who really doesn’t care about a response from the audiences to what he has just created. Every director has his own motivations and his own audiences. Jim Jarmusch has a million of devoted fans. James Cameron has the whole world hooked.”

According to many filmmakers, making a comedy hit is actually much more difficult than a teary-eyed drama, isn’t it?

"To make any good product is difficult and takes certain craftsmanship. The better craftsman you are, the better the product can be. Competition makes you stronger.”

Given that Timur Bekmambetov – one of the most celebrated, foremost and successful Russian filmmakers working in Hollywood and who directed “Night Watch”, “Day Watch”, and “Wanted” – is producing the film, will his “Vykrutasy” also try to attract audiences outside of Russia after the film’s release later this autumn?

“If you shoot a Russian-language movie, you are targeting Russian audiences. It is quite rare that your story is so understandable for audiences across the world that it becomes successful elsewhere. But when you are making a comedy about a specific situation, with specific jokes and dialogues, it is hard to target international audiences.”

Gabriadze has been working with Bekmambetov for 16 years and says he is a great producer not only because “he has great knowledge of production”, but also because “he can find a solution to any problem.”

“Having such a creative producer working on this project was a great privilege and luck. Filmmaking is team work with hundreds of people involved. There were about 500 taking part in ‘Vykrutasy’, and it is important to know exactly who you want to get for this or that job. There is a lot of communication going on before, during and after the shooting. If you think of it, it is about this hour-and-a-half of attention-span that your film demands from the viewer. It basically comes down to this: you need somebody to get dressed, leave the house, go to the movie theatre, buy a ticket and spend a couple of hours of their life in the movies without being disappointed. If somebody gives you their full attention, you have to be respectful of that. It’s like being a host to me. If you have a guest, you can’t be boring, you have to entertain and give them something – energy, drive, emotions.”

Gabriadze says he personally prefers movies in which there’s something for everyone, no matter how smart you are. “I hate pretentious art,” he declares. Probably that is why one of his next challenges is his father’s alma-mater: theatre.

“I want to do a puppet show in Tbilisi. It is a different kind of contact with the public, really, more irrational and unconventional. It’s some kind of magic where you have to let yourself go.”

‘Stone’ official site and HD trailer, ‘Afterlife’ official site expanded

Beginning with the John Curran-directed crime drama Stone, the film has a newly released official site at www.stonemovie.com. Although the website doesn’t yet feature a lot of content, it does come with a HD version of roughly the same trailer we posted here on the site a couple of days ago. Check out in HD below or on YouTube, or download it via iTunes from the Apple Trailers website:

The website also finally confirms Stone will get a limited theatrical U.S. release on October 8.

Then for some goodies from the recently expanded U.S. official site for Resident Evil: Afterlife at www.residentevil-movie.com. The website now has a lot more content, including wallpapers, both trailers, information, games, and a couple of mini clips from the film scattered over various sections of the site. We’ve updated the gallery with a couple of screen shots of some of the new Milla Jovovich “poster-ish” pictures on the site, a couple of hi-res wallpapers and a better-res version of Milla and co-star Boris Kodjoe’s promotional still. Milla talks ‘Vykrutasy’ in Russian TV interview

Check out this really great Russian-language video clip from Milla Jovovich discussing Vykrutasy in a Russian TV report on the upcoming romcom. Milla stars in the film as Nadya opposite Konstantin Khabenskiy and Ivan Urgant.

Although both the report and Milla’s interview are in Russian, Sugar Mouse tells us Milla talks in her interview about how she got involved in the film, the difficulties she experienced having to learn her lines in the course of just 10 days of filming, how she enjoyed working on the film, and even pokes fun at her accent. The clip also features a lot of fantastic behind-the-scenes glimpses from the wedding set,so it’s definitely worth a look even if you don’t understand the language. The clip via YouTube:

By the way, this report also confirms our earlier speculations that the director of Vykrutasy is indeed Levan “Leo” Gabriadze, and not Wanted-director Timur Bekmambetov as the Internet Movie Database claims. In Gabriadze’s interview segment, you can just make out the word “Director” (“Режиссер”) under his name. Bekmambetov, meanwhile, is only producing.

‘Vykrutasy’ official site and teaser, out this November

Check out this teaser trailer for the upcoming Russian-language romcom Vykrutasy from the film’s official site at www.vykrutasy.ru. The teaser is (obviously) in Russian and features mostly stars Konstantin Khabenskiy and Ivan Urgant in their respective roles, however Milla Jovovich does make a brief appearance as Nadya at the very end. A couple of screen caps of her glimpses in the trailer have been uploaded to our gallery.

The trailer, as embedded below or on YouTube/Vykrutasy.ru:

By the way, another clarification regarding the film, this time its director. Although according Russian-language news websites such as the RIA Novosti website, reporting from the set at the time, the director of Vykrutasy is Leo Gabriadze with Timur Bekmambetov producing, the Internet Movie Database-page for the film lists the director as Bekmambetov (best known for directing Wanted). Which information is true, we don’t know for sure at this point, but it is worth pointing out that the Vykrutasy website also lists Bekmambetov only as the producer. Leo Gabriadze was also photographed several times on the set in directing gear e.g. here and here, whereas Bekmambetov seems to have only been on the set to observe.

Finally, according to the site, Vykrutasy will be released in Russian theaters as soon as this November. This looks like such a fun movie!

Milla Jovovich Tweets Herself in Three Musketeers Costume

Just a short while ago, Milla Jovovich posted these Twitter pics from the first fittings of her The Three Musketeers costumes. They’re grainy, but still provide a worthwhile peep at the work in progress:

Milla Jovovich (tweet): ‘Quite a collar on that chick! Lol! Its like a kick ass “midsummer nights dream”!’

This billionth film version of Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers is directed by Paul W. S. Anderson (incidentally Jovovich’s husband). We would also love to tell you who the costume designer is, but we don’t actually know. So if anyone can help us out, please do.

Milla Jovovich: ‘Here’s the canvas sample 4 the dress! Incredible right?! That’s w out any fabric, ruffles or hairpieces. So fun!’

The Three Musketeers is set during the 17th century, a progressive time for fashionable dress. After all this was the decade that Charles II invented the three piece suit. For women the dominant look was pasty face and pasty chest, the latter displayed with the deep ‘décolletage’ (or plunging neckline). Two, sometimes three skirts were worn, often adorned with lace, although as the century wore on such decoration became more restrained.

Milla Jovovich: ‘And full length…‘ In these very early photographs, Milla Jovovich is exhibiting at least some these elements, a plunging neckline perhaps being the most obvious (and some enormous bonnets). Yet this is only a generalisation, plus historical accuracy in not the only consideration of the period costume designer. Above all else Jovovich’s outfits must represent her character – in this case the villainous Milady de Winter.

We will have to wait a while to see how the film turns out through; it is due for release on…well, a long way off yet.

‘Stone’ out October 8?

FreeP.com makes a small mention of John Curran’s crime drama Stone in a recent article, according to which the film will be released in the U.S. October 8. Milla Jovovich stars as Lucetta opposite Edward “Stone” Norton and Robert De Niro. From the source:

Stone, the Edward Norton-Robert DeNiro drama set in Michigan, will be released Oct. 8. The movie, filmed here last year, also stars Milla Jovovich and Frances Conroy. Some scenes were shot at the closed Southern Michigan Correctional Facility in Jackson.

The article doesn’t specify whether this’ll be a theatrical or e.g. straight-to-DVD release, nor does the film’s Wikipedia-page, which lists the film’s US release date as October 7. Stone’s Internet Movie Database-page doesn’t yet have a precise release date for the U.S. Hopefully, more details will surface online soon.

Meanwhile, check out the trailer for the film if you haven’t yet, as embedded below:
